大船観音寺の成り立ち
JR大船駅からも見える白い大きな観音様。みなさんもご覧になったことはありますよね？
大船観音の建設工事は、昭和4年（1929年）に始まりました。しかし、同年に起こった世界恐慌の影響で資金が集まらず、昭和9年（1934年）には工事が中止されてしまいます。その後、日中戦争や第二次世界大戦が続いたこともあり、観音像は未完成のまま、23年間放置されていました。
昭和4年に建設が始まりながらも放置されていた大船観音を完成させるよう、牧野良三氏や高階瓏仙（たかしな ろうせん）禅師は、東急グループの総帥・五島慶太氏に依頼します。これを受けて、後に五島美術館の館長となる西村清氏が、工事の統括を担当することになりました。
そして昭和29年（1954年）11月2日、五島慶太氏、高階瓏仙禅師、安藤正純氏らが発起人となり、「財団法人 大船観音協会」が設立されました。
昭和32年（1957年）5月18日に起工式が行われ、昭和35年（1960年）4月28日には落慶式（完成を祝う式典）が執り行われました。総工事費はおよそ4千数百万円とされ、資金集めのために「1口100円」の募金も行われました。

それにしても、昭和4年に工事が始まって、昭和9年に中止になり、そこから23年・・この観音様には、地元の方たちを含め多くの人達の熱い思いが込められているんですね。
子供のころは、見るととても大きく夜などは怖かった思い出があります。でも、お顔がとても穏やかですよね。女性として捉え、長谷の大仏さんと夜中にデートしてる・・・なんてこともよく言われてました。
Construction of the Ōfuna Kannon statue first began in 1929 (Showa 4), but due to the Great Depression that same year, funding ran out and the project was halted in 1934. With the outbreak of the Sino-Japanese War and World War II, the unfinished statue was left untouched for 23 years.
Later on, Ryozo Makino and Zen master Rōsen Takashina asked Keita Gotō, the head of the Tokyu Group, to help complete the long-abandoned Kannon statue. Gotō assigned Kiyoshi Nishimura—who would later become the director of the Gotoh Museum—to oversee the project.
On November 2, 1954, the Ōfuna Kannon Foundation was established by Gotō, Takashina, Masazumi Ando, and others.
Construction officially resumed on May 18, 1957, and the completion ceremony was held on April 28, 1960. The total construction cost was said to be in the tens of millions of yen, partly funded through a public campaign where people could donate 100 yen per unit.
12月18日の納め観音について
11時から始まり、11時20分ごろには終了しました（2022年の情報）
茶湯会併修も行われます。「ちゃとうえ、ちゃとうかい」と読むらしいです。
併修（へいしゅう）とは、２つ以上の法事を同時に行うこと。
観音様の前に人形などが置かれ、僧侶たちによる読経が行われました。
若干山の上ですので、寒かったです。防寒対策はされておいた方がよろしいかと思います。

The event begins at 11:00 AM and ends around 11:20 AM (2022 information).
Dolls and other items are placed in front of the Kannon statue, and monks chant sutras.
Since it’s a little high up in the mountains, it was a bit chilly. It’s recommended to dress warmly.
