Amazing Enoshima Tombolo Walk: Cross the Sea at Low Tide

鎌倉散策

Most visitors reach Enoshima by crossing the bridge, but on certain low‑tide days, you can actually walk across the sea to the island. When the tide drops far enough, Enoshima connects to the mainland, creating a natural sand pathway known as a “tombolo.”
This rare phenomenon occurs when waves sweep sand around the island and gradually build a temporary land bridge.
When the tide level falls to around 20 cm or lower, the Enoshima tombolo may appear—offering the unforgettable experience of “walking over the sea” to reach the island.

When the tide is high, as in the photo, the pathway disappears and you can’t cross on foot.

The Fujisawa City Assciation website publishes the dates when the Enoshima tombolo is likely to appear.
Please check their official schedule for the most up‑to‑date information.

There’s still time to catch it this year (2026), so let’s go!

Normally, the sea covers this area, so you can’t walk across.

I visited Enoshima on May 17, 2026, a day when the tide was forecast to drop to –7 cm.
By the time I arrived around 9:20 a.m., the tide had already receded enough for me to walk across.

Seeing Enoshima from beneath the bridge—especially from the right side—is something you almost never get to experience.
It felt like a rare and special viewpoint.

As for the opening time of the Enoshima stairs, they were already open before 10:00 a.m., so I was able to climb up without any problem.

About the Tombolo

By a little past 10:20, the tide was almost at its lowest, so you could walk across at a relaxed pace.
Children were happily searching for small fish and crabs, or playing in the sand.

When I went back after 12:30, the tide had started to come in, but the water was still only up to the knees.
Some people were giving it a try anyway, saying things like “Maybe we can still make it across!” as they walked through the water.
